I’ll be honest and point out that I really hate electric bicycles. I love riding bikes. The efficient transmission of human power brings me something akin to joy. The fact that a lot of cruising boats are now using electric bikes, does not make me happy. I’ll also add the fact that some lithium powered bikes are a serious fire hazard which makes me all kinds of nervous.
However, while I don’t have any plans to ever ride an electric bike, this bit of tech did get me excited…
Scaled up a bit this just might be the answer to all of the negatives of electric propulsion on a sailboat.

Several scooter companies have cluttered Seattle with their e-scooters and e-bikes. A scooter has been useful when a ferry ran late and I needed to get to an appointment my feet won’t get me to in time.
I’ve wondered for a while whether a small electric scooter might be a better “fit” aboard than an e-bike, or possibly a Brampton folder. And there is a fun factor that is undeniable. Just don’t forget your helmet!
