the problem with the yachting press…

A question of note, needful stuff regarding vaccines, and in the “catastrophic population collapse” department…

The yachting press has long been a disappointment. Every month I read 48° North because there’s almost always a good article that will bring a smile to my face or some info that will come in handy when one or another job needs to be done. Factor in the fact that 48° North is free and it’s mostly a win/win situation. Then again, the one downside for me is that every month they have a new products post that really gets up my nose as it’s mostly expensive bling.

Another magazine that I’ve subscribed to for decades is Practical Sailor which toiled in the Consumer Reports territory and was a trusted source of good solid information where boat stuff was concerned. They did their homework. Their product tests were a bit of sanity where most publications were more concerned with how many advertising dollars a good review would be worth. Sadly, it would appear that Practical Sailor has taken a left turn into the world of consumerist fan boy dream. Worse, their current fixation of dubious content videos (their factless knee jerk opinion piece on Sharpies I found especially irksome) and then there’s this “Ooh Shiny” one that pretty much sealed my decision not to renew my Practical Sailor subscription.

Sure, I’m very interested in new products and new innovative boats but I draw the line at the ongoing state of affairs where gear and boat reviews are just regurgitated product brochures with no critical fact checking or research involved.

Seriously, yachting press, we really deserve better.

Nuff said.
