Relentless…

A crosswalk hack, some historical notes, and this brought a smile…

These days, it seems everyone is trying to sell me something. Now, as someone who has to make a living, I understand that selling is part of what we refer to as commerce. Which we all are in someway or other, big or small.

I get that.

But there’s a point where the relentless pressure to consume becomes something akin to torture.

West Marine, for instance, sends me a minimum of two emails a day telling me that there is stuff they’re selling that I can’t live without.

It’s annoying. Worse, the culling of all the junk they send eats into the most precious thing I have… time. Time is fleeting and finite; making it difficult to do all the things I need or want to do.

Of course, the joke’s on the various vendors that clog up my inbox. With each new come-on they become less likely to actually get any business when I actually want to buy anything.

Thinking about the relentless pressure to buy stuff got me thinking. Relentless is a sibling to desperation and go well together in a Pyrrhic situation.

In a world of finite resources, unlimited growth is impossible, self-destructive, or suicidal. Anyone who’s sailed across an ocean knows that you’re stuck with a limited resource situation. Food, water, fuel cannot be replenished mid way. You know, finite.

With our charter gig, we respect our clients and only send out a couple emails a month. Enough to let them know what’s up and any good deals they might find interesting. There’s always a link to our blogs for Yacht Charters and Barge Cruises. You can take a look, too.

No pressure.

  1. Funny timing. I was browsing an adhesive suppliers website this morning and was consistently “harassed” by an online chat-bot. When i got the information i needed, i let the bot know that i would be buying from elsewhere and why.
Hopefully the “essential cookies” did not contain 1200 “shared value partners”, that will now bombard me with unsolicited email. It sucks, and counter productive.
