A film I really want to see, orphaned oil wells, and in the “about those marmots” department…
I need a new pair of oars. The reason being that I’m selling a couple of dinghies and they sell better with oars included.
With me so far?
Anyway, for a bit of amusement, I decided to check out what oars cost these days…
- West Marine sells single oars for $59.99 so a pair would cost $119.98.
- Sawyer makes very nice oars for $160 a pair.
- Shaw & Tenney will sell you a pair of their bespoke oars for $409.
I don’t even want to guess what the shipping cost of a couple of 7-foot oars would come to.
This leaves us with the solution of DIYing a pair, which is pretty simple and a whole lot more affordable than any of the above oars. All you need is a plan, a 2 x 6 eight-foot piece of clear yellow pine or Miami teak, some glue, and a few hours of free time for some wood butchery.
By my reckoning that will come to just about twenty bucks.
Need I really say more?

Christine DeMerchant (maybe that’s right) has EZ oar plans. I’m beginning to think Doug Caseys anarcho-capitalist moniker fits nomadic sailors quite well. Hanging out where governments (sanctioned gangs) treat us best. Saying adios to the cattle pens of nationalism.
