need/want…

I recently had someone point out that (not for the first time) a VolksCruiser t-shirt would go a long way towards supporting the blog and that everyone is doing “merch” these days. As it happens, I was actually considering doing a t-shirt for a cruising oriented film as an ongoing promotion element.

Of course, being Mr Cheapseats, a VolksCruiser or a promotional t-shirt for a film would have to be good quality, affordable and entertain because who want to wear a boring piece of crap… Right?

Now, back when I was in Jr High (Virgil Jr High for any Los Angeles folks out there), I used to silk screen t-shirts all the time to the point that I was buying Towncraft t-shirts by the gross. I did not get rich but it bought a few guitars including my first Les Paul. Anyway, I have half a clue on the economics of t-shirt sales and what’s entailed. I should also point out that in Jr High my heroes were Jimi Hendrix, Pinchas Zukerman, and Big Daddy Roth which might explain a lot.

These days, my go to purveyors of shirts is 6 Dollar Shirts. They do a pretty good job of silk screening on better than decent t-shirts and, while they are more like $10 dollar shirts now, IMHO they’re still better quality than most of the t-shirts being sold in boat related circles where a simple screened shirt will cost you $30 or so bucks. Seriously, thirty bucks for a t-shirt with some ink is insane.

My knee jerk reaction is that a VolksCruiser t-shirt with attitude would have to sell for at least $15 + shipping and brings up the question does anyone actually want or need such a beast?
